The number of sexual crimes committed against children is staggering. Though experts agree that most sex crimes are not reported, making the statistics watered down, The University of New Hampshire Crimes Against Children Research Center statistics show that 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys is a victim of sexual abuse.
And though groups like NARSOL will claim abuse by strangers is rare, a 2003 National Institute of Justice study revealed that more than one-fifth (23.2%) of sexual assaults are committed by strangers.
Further, the sexual recidivism rate for child molesters is 52%, a far cry from the rarity NARSOL would have you believe. Unfortunately, children today are subjected to sexually explicit images and events on almost a daily basis or worse, blatantly using them for child porn in advertising. It is excusable to want to water down, or eliminate, laws that protect innocent children and punish sexual predators.
